About the Boerboel

The Boerboel is a majestic breed of dog that originated in South Africa as a farm guard and working dog. Its large size and muscular build make it an intimidating sight, with males weighing in at 110-175 pounds and standing 24-28 inches tall at the shoulder. Its short, dense coat comes in a variety of colors including fawn, brindle, brown, and black. The boerboel has a distinctive head shape featuring a black mask and erect ears.

Despite its fearsome appearance, the Boerboel is a loyal and loving breed that is highly protective of its family and territory. It is confident and courageous, but also gentle and affectionate with those it trusts. Its high intelligence and trainability make it a valuable asset as a working dog, but it can also be strong-willed and independent, requiring patient and consistent training.

The Boerboel has a rich history, developed in the 19th century by Dutch settlers in South Africa as a working dog and guard. Its name, which means "farmer's dog" in Afrikaans, reflects its origins as a loyal companion and protector of the family farm. Today, the breed is recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) and is prized by many for its loyalty, intelligence, and affectionate nature.

Despite its many wonderful qualities, the Boerboel is not without its challenges. Its large size and high energy level require regular exercise and training to keep it happy and healthy. Additionally, the breed is prone to certain health issues, including hip and elbow dysplasia, as well as eye problems. With proper care and attention, however, the Boerboel can thrive as a beloved member of the family, providing years of loyal companionship and protection.

Is The Boerboel Right For Me?

Loyal Protector

The Boerboel is a loyal protector, a giant guardian, a dog we feel will lay down its life to protect the people it loves most.

With that said, this breed is not for everyone- it is strong, dominant, and (sometimes) stubborn needing strong, steady, and educated guidance.

Boerboels are intelligent, trainable, and eager to please, however, they still demand significant time commitment to properly train and socialize.

These dogs will grow to be larger than most children and some adults. Do you have the time and capacity to properly socialize and train your new family member and protector? The last thing anyone wants is a human-sized liability. Proper care, socialization, and training are essential.

Guardian

The Boerboel was bred to guard large farms in South Africa. "Boer"means "farmer"-this was the farmer's dog tasked with protecting the farm from large predators, people, etc.

The boerboel takes this job seriously and will fiercely guard its territory and family. As with many guardian breeds, the boerboel can be intolerant of strangers which is why early and ongoing proper socialization is vital.

The sheer size and power of this animal demands respect. The honor of owning such a magnificent dog requires much responsibility.

Family

The Boerboel thrives when it is an integral part of your household. It's referred to as a "velcro-dog" because it will always want to be with you no matter what. Boerboels are playful and enjoy fun games and play sessions with it's family. You will be it's pack!

This dog needs a strong, confident pack leader to guide play and  work alike, which will be your responsibility. Boerboels can be dominant and will gladly step into the pack-leadership role if permitted, which will not be a positive experience for all involved.
